Game Day, It’s a Whole Thing
See, when it’s game day, it’s like a holiday. Everyone’s listenin’ to the radio, cheerin’ and hollerin’. You got yer fellas callin’ the game, tellin’ ya what’s happenin’ on the field. They talk real fast sometimes, gets me all flustered, but ya get the gist of it. They tell ya who’s got the ball, who’s runnin’, who’s tacklin’. And when App State scores, oh boy, you can hear the whole town eruptin’! It’s louder than a hen house when a fox gets in.
They play at this place called Kidd Brewer Stadium. Folks call it “The Rock.” Sounds mighty impressive, don’t it? I ain’t never been there myself, my old bones ain’t up for that kinda climbin’, but I hear it’s somethin’ else. Packed full of people screamin’ their lungs out. But even if ya can’t be there, the radio makes ya feel like yer right in the middle of it all.

Now, if you wanna listen, you gotta find the right station. They got a few of ’em. WKBC, that’s one. And WATA, that’s another. They got different numbers and letters, somethin’ about FM and AM, I don’t rightly understand it all. But the important thing is, you find the one that plays the Mountaineers. They say you can even listen on somethin’ called “TuneIn,” which sounds fancy. I guess that means you can listen anywhere, even if you ain’t from around here.
- The fellas on the radio
There’s this fella, David Jackson, he’s the main voice you hear. They say he went to App State himself, so he knows his stuff. He gets real excited when the Mountaineers are doin’ good, and ya can tell he gets frustrated when they ain’t. He’s like one of us, just a regular fella who loves his football. And then there’s the whole crew, they break down the games, talk about what went wrong, what went right. They even talk about what’s gonna happen next season, which is always somethin’ to look forward to.
- The college kids get in on it too.
There’s even a radio station run by the college kids, WASU. Now that’s somethin’, ain’t it? Young folks gettin’ their learn on while yappin’ about sports. They play all sorts of stuff on there, not just football, but when it’s game day, you bet they’re all about the Mountaineers.
App State, More Than Just Football
App State ain’t just about football, ya know. They got all sorts of sports, seventeen of ’em they say. And they got this mascot, a fella dressed up like an old mountain man. They call him Yosef. He’s got a long beard and a funny hat, reminds me of my old Pappy. He gets the crowd all riled up, dancin’ around and carryin’ on.
This App State team, they used to be in somethin’ called FCS, then they switched to FBS. Don’t ask me what that means, it’s all Greek to me. But they say it’s a bigger deal, more important. And they’ve been doin’ real good since they switched, winnin’ lots of games. Makes folks around here proud, that’s for sure.
So, if you wanna know about App State football radio, that’s the gist of it. It’s about community, about cheerin’ on yer team, and about feelin’ like yer part of somethin’ bigger than yerself. It’s about the roar of the crowd, the excitement of the game, and the voices of the fellas on the radio tellin’ ya everythin’ that’s happenin’. And even if you don’t know a lick about football, you can still enjoy it. Just listen to the sounds, feel the energy, and let yerself get swept up in the moment. It’s good for the soul, I tell ya.
