Okay, so, today I wanna talk about these soccer scrunchies I’ve been making. It all started when I was looking for some cute hair ties for my niece who’s totally into soccer. I mean, the girl lives and breathes soccer.
I checked out some online shops, and, wow, the prices were kinda wild! I saw some for like $4.99, some at $5.99, and even a pack for $12.99. For scrunchies? That’s a bit much, don’t you think?
Then I stumbled upon some silk scrunchies, which got me thinking. Silk is supposed to be good for your hair, right? And those were all about bold patterns and bright colors, especially back in the ’80s and ’90s.
So, I decided, why not make my own? I headed out to a few sporting goods stores in Philly – C & M Sporting Goods, Shibe Vintage Sports, you know, the usual spots. I even checked out some regular stores like Adidas and a couple of other places mentioned on Yelp.
Found some nice, soft elastic and some soccer-themed fabric. Nothing too fancy, just something to get started. I figured I could make a bunch of these for way less than what they were selling for online.
First, I cut the fabric into strips. Then, I folded each strip in half, with the right sides together. After that, I sewed along the long edge, leaving a small opening to turn it right side out later.
Next, I took the elastic and threaded it through the fabric tube using a safety pin. This part was a bit tricky, but I got the hang of it. Once the elastic was through, I sewed the ends together to form a loop.
Finally, I turned the fabric right side out and sewed the opening shut. Voila! Soccer scrunchies!
I ended up making a whole bunch of them. Some with plain soccer ball patterns, some with little gnomes playing soccer (those were my niece’s favorite), and even some with custom designs I drew myself.
- First, I cut the fabric into strips.
- Then, I folded each strip in half and sewed along the edge.
- Next, I threaded the elastic through the fabric tube.
- After that, I sewed the elastic ends together.
- Finally, I turned the fabric right side out and sewed the opening shut.
It was a fun little project, and my niece loved them! Plus, I saved a ton of money compared to buying them online. Win-win, right? I think I’ll make some more and maybe give them away as gifts to her teammates. They’re not perfect, but they’re made with love, and that’s what counts, I guess.
They’re pretty easy to make. A bit time-consuming, maybe, but definitely cheaper than buying a bunch of them at five bucks a pop. I made a ton, and they turned out pretty good, if I do say so myself.
Making Soccer Scrunchies
The steps are quite simple, and I’m sure anyone can follow along:
- Gather your materials: fabric, elastic, sewing machine, thread, scissors, and a safety pin.
- Cut the fabric into strips. I usually make mine about 20 inches long and 4 inches wide.
- Fold each fabric strip in half lengthwise, right sides together.
- Sew along the long edge, leaving a small opening for turning.
- Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic.
- Thread the elastic through the fabric tube using the safety pin.
- Sew the ends of the elastic together to form a loop.
- Turn the fabric right side out through the opening.
- Sew the opening shut, either by hand or with a machine.
And that’s it! You’ve got yourself some awesome soccer scrunchies.
