Okay, so, let’s talk about the Fort Ward turf soccer field. I’ve been meaning to get out there and kick the ball around, and I finally made it happen. Here’s how it went down.
First off, I was kind of curious about this place. I mean, I’ve heard things, seen some online chatter, mostly about how some folks think turf is a bit of a mixed bag compared to regular grass. You know, some people say the turf is better because it is always even, but others miss the feel of real grass.
Anyway, I grabbed my cleats and headed over. I was thinking, “Is this just for the serious youth teams or what?” Turns out, it’s not as exclusive as it looks. That was a nice surprise. I guess anyone can just roll up and play there.
Getting on the field, I noticed the turf felt pretty good under my feet. I did a couple of warm up drills, some sprints, you know, the usual stuff. It felt consistent, that’s for sure. No weird bumps or holes to worry about. This particular turf seemed like the soft kind, maybe the polyethylene stuff I read about somewhere. Not that super hard nylon stuff that feels like you’re playing on concrete.

The Good Stuff
It was easy to get a good run going. The ball moved predictably, which is always a plus. And I didn’t have to worry about the field being muddy or uneven.

The Not-So-Good
Honestly, it got pretty hot out there. Turf tends to do that, I guess. And yeah, it’s just not the same as playing on a good grass field. There’s something about the feel of real grass that you kind of miss.
After playing around for a while, I started chatting with some other people who were there. Some were really into the turf, saying it’s great for practicing their skills without worrying about the field conditions. Others were more like me, appreciating the consistency but still missing the good old-fashioned grass.
So, what’s the final word? I’d say the Fort Ward turf field is a solid option, especially if you’re looking for a reliable surface to play on. I am not a professional, I do not care so much, I just need a place to play soccer. But hey, I get why some people might prefer grass. At the end of the day, it is about personal preference, like, there are different types of turf out there, I learned – polyethylene, nylon, polypropylene, the whole nine yards, but I just want to play soccer.
I will definitely be back, but I probably won’t ditch my favorite grass field just yet. It is nice to have options, right? Maybe I will check out some other turf fields around here, just to see how they compare. Anyway, that was my little adventure at the Fort Ward turf field. Hope it gives you a better idea of what to expect if you decide to check it out.
