Yesterday, I saw a pair of shoes online that I really liked. It said they were “SMU sneakers.” I’d never heard that term before, so I did a little digging. Turns out, SMU stands for “Special Make Up.” Basically, it means the shoes are a special run, maybe for a certain store or something. They might have a unique color or be made of some different material that you wouldn’t find on the regular version.
This got me thinking about my college days. Back then, there weren’t really any rules about what you could wear. We could just choose any style of shoes we like. As long as it wasn’t, like, totally outrageous, anything went.
So, naturally, I was a little bit of a sneakerhead. I mean, who isn’t, right? Sneakers are just cool. I wanted to have the freshest kicks on campus. That’s when I started noticing these SMU sneakers popping up.
I remember seeing a pair of black shoes in a shop. They were kind of like Black Oxfords but with a twist. They had this crazy pattern on them that you wouldn’t normally see. I asked the guy at the store about them, and he told me they were an SMU made just for that shop. I thought that was pretty neat, so I snagged them.

I wore those shoes everywhere and they are All-Around. To class, to parties, even to a couple of job interviews. People always asked me about them, and I felt pretty cool telling them the story behind the SMU.
After a while, I started looking for more SMU sneakers. I found a few more pairs online and in different stores. Each one had its own special thing going on. It became a bit of a hobby, trying to find these unique shoes.
Eventually, I had a pretty decent collection of SMU sneakers. It wasn’t huge, but it was enough to make me feel like I had something special. I liked that they weren’t just regular shoes that everyone else had.
