Okay, so I wanted to mess around with some football stats today, and I stumbled upon this thing called “STF.” I was like, what the heck is that? I found some stuff online about it, but it wasn’t super clear, so I figured I’d dig in and share what I found.
Starting with the Basics
First, I tried to figure out what STF actually stands for. I saw some places saying it had something to do with yards lost. And then I found someone talking about “STFY,” which I guessed meant “STF Yards.” This was a start, but not the whole picture.
Digging Deeper
I kept looking around, and I found some other terms like “SRS,” “TAR,” and “REC.” SRS, from what I gathered, is some kind of rating system that uses points and schedule strength. TAR and REC seemed to be about running backs getting the ball, with TAR being the total times a back is thrown to, and REC being the number of times they actually catch it. Then there’s “Rec Yds,” which is how many yards they get from those catches, and “Rec YPC,” which is just yards per catch. Simple enough, right?
Figuring out STF
But I still didn’t really get what STF was. Then I found something that gave me a better idea. It seems like STF is related to how many times a player gets stopped for a loss or no gain. So basically, it’s like a count of how many times a play gets stuffed. If a running back gets tackled behind the line of scrimmage, that’s probably an STF. I looked at some game logs and saw things like “3 STF’S and 9 STFY’S.” So, that probably means 3 times a player got stopped for a loss or no gain, and those plays resulted in a total loss of 9 yards.
Putting it All Together
So, it seems like STF is just one piece of the puzzle when you’re looking at football stats. There are all these other abbreviations like PF, PA, NET PTS, and STRK, which are just total points for, total points against, net points, and streak, respectively. And then there’s stuff about different positions, like FS (free safety) and SS (strong safety), and how their jobs change depending on the play.
Honestly, it’s a lot to take in. But I think I’ve got a decent handle on STF now. It’s basically a measure of how many times a player gets stopped for a loss, and it’s related to other stats like STFY, which is the total yards lost on those plays.
It’s kind of cool to see how all these different stats fit together to give you a picture of what’s happening on the field. Maybe I’ll dive into some other football stats tomorrow. Who knows what I’ll find?
