Okay, so, I’ve been diving deep into the whole Ohio State basketball coaching situation. It’s been a wild ride, let me tell you.
First off, they fired Chris Holtmann. Yeah, the head coach, gone, mid-season! I couldn’t believe it when I heard. They are paying him a lot of money to go away, that’s for sure. Seventh year, and boom, out the door. I mean, I get it, things weren’t exactly peachy, but still, mid-season? That’s rough. I started digging around to see who might replace him.
The big thing is that Ohio State is also switching up their athletic director. Gene Smith is stepping down, and this new guy, Ross Bjork, is coming in from Texas AM. I read somewhere that it was Smith, not Bjork, who made the call on Holtmann. Interesting, right?
So, I started making a list of potential candidates. It’s like putting together a puzzle, trying to figure out who would be the best fit.
- Pat Kelsey: He’s currently at Charleston. They’re doing okay, 16-7. Heard his name pop up a few times.
- Wes Miller: Over at Cincinnati. They’ve had a bit of a rough patch, 15-9 this season. But he’s got a decent overall record.
Others I Considered
I looked into a bunch of other names too, there was a list of nine guys they were thinking about. It’s all speculation at this point, though. And who knows, they might pull someone completely out of left field. They also had an associate head coach, Jake Diebler and his brother, Jon, who is a former Buckeye basketball legend.
It’s a big decision, you know? This is Ohio State basketball we’re talking about. The fans are passionate, the expectations are high, and the pressure is immense. There is that rivalry with Michigan, too. I can only imagine what the new guy will be up against. They need someone who can handle all of that and, most importantly, win games.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a mess right now. But hey, that’s college sports for you. Always some drama, always something happening. I’ll keep following along, see how this all shakes out. It’s gonna be interesting, that’s for sure.
