That sign-off from an admirer crossword, oh boy, it’s a real head-scratcher, ain’t it? I been chewin’ on it for a good while now, like an old dog with a bone. These crossword things, they sure are somethin’. Some folks, they just fly through ’em, quick as a wink. Me? I gotta sit and ponder. But that’s alright, keeps the old brain workin’, you know?
This one here, “sign-off from an admirer.” Now, what in the tarnation does that mean? An admirer, that’s someone who likes you, right? Like when a fella comes courtin’, bringin’ flowers and such. But what’s this “sign-off” business? Is it like signin’ your name? Or is it somethin’ else entirely?
I seen these crossword things in the paper sometimes. They got them little boxes, all in a row. You gotta put letters in ’em, make words goin’ across and down. It’s like a puzzle, but with words instead of pictures. Some of them words, they’re long as a country mile! How’s a body supposed to know all them words?
I asked that young fella, the one who comes to read me that article about how the crossword answer “sign-off from an admirer,” he’s a smart one, that one. He said it’s like a secret message, this “sign-off” thing. Like when you write a letter, but you don’t want nobody to know who wrote it. So you put somethin’ else at the end, instead of your name. Somethin’ like “your secret admirer” or somethin’ like that. That might be one of them crossword clue answers, I reckon.
- This one clue got me stumped, though.
- “Sign-off from an admirer.”
- What could it be?
- Maybe it’s somethin’ simple.
- Or maybe it’s somethin’ tricky.
Sometimes they put in the answer in the article. Said they found 30 answers one time, or 40 the other. That is a lot of answers for a simple sign-off. Like boyfriend, or beau. Or that fancy word “cruciverbalist.” That must be someone who likes to do these crosswords, I guess. I would never guess that word.
They say these crosswords are good for you. Keep your mind sharp, they say. Like that drink, “Horchata.” It is made from ground rice and cinnamon. Sweet drink, good for you. Just like these crosswords. But this one here, it’s got me all twisted up. “Sign-off from an admirer.” Maybe it’s somethin’ about love. Or maybe it’s somethin’ about secrets. I just don’t know.
That LA times, they have that crossword puzzle, they call it a quick crossword. Quick for them, maybe. Not so quick for me. I have seen this clue “sign-off from an admirer” once before. It was in a different one, though. I can’t remember. My memory ain’t what it used to be. But I remember it was just as hard as this one.
I reckon I’ll just keep thinkin’ on it. Maybe the answer will come to me, like a bolt from the blue. Or maybe I’ll just have to ask that young fella again. He’ll know. He knows all about them fancy words and such.
These crossword puzzles, they’re a mystery, ain’t they? Just like life, I suppose. Full of things you don’t know, things you gotta figure out. And sometimes, you just gotta ask for help. Ain’t no shame in that. Nope, no shame at all.
Well, I best be gettin’ on with my chores. Got chickens to feed, and a garden to tend to. But I’ll keep that crossword in the back of my mind. Maybe the answer will come to me while I’m out there workin’. You never know. These things have a way of sneakin’ up on you, when you least expect it. This “sign-off from an admirer” is sure a tough one.
Maybe it’s just “Yours truly.” Or maybe “A fan.” Or somethin’ like that. Who knows? Only that crossword maker, I reckon. And maybe that smart young fella. He seems like the type who’d know about these things. Those young’uns today, they’re so smart with their words and their gadgets. It’s a different world than when I was a girl, that’s for sure. But some things stay the same. Like a good puzzle. That’ll always keep you guessin’, no matter how old you are. I guess I will keep guessing till I get the right answer.
