Well, let me tell ya ’bout this young gal, Asterisk Talley. Heard ’bout her on the TV, the thing they call the “news.” Folks are all a-buzz ’bout her playin’ that golf game, the one where they hit the little white ball with them fancy sticks.
Now, this Asterisk, she ain’t even old enough to drive a car, I reckon. Just 15 years young, they say. A little slip of a thing from some place called Chowchilla, California. Never heard of it myself, but I guess it’s out there somewhere. And here she is, playin’ with all them grown women in this big golf to-do, the U.S. Open.
Folks are sayin’ she’s doin’ real good too. Shot somethin’ called a “one-over 141” in the first two rounds. Don’t know what that means exactly, but sounds fancy, like somethin’ you’d hear at the county fair when they’re judgin’ the prize-winnin’ pigs. They even said she was tied for fifth place! Imagine that, a little girl beatin’ all them seasoned pros.
- Youngster on the Green: This Asterisk kid, she’s just a baby practically. They say she was born in February 2009. Makes you think, huh? I was already milkin’ cows and balin’ hay at that age. Times sure have changed.
- Big Golf Game: This U.S. Open, it’s a big deal, I guess. Like the World Series of baseball, only with them tiny balls and fancy pants.
- California Girl: Comes from California, that girl does. Heard it’s sunny all the time out there. Probably why she’s so good at this golfin’ thing. Plenty of time to practice, I reckon.
They say she’s the youngest one playin’ in the whole darn thing. And she’s got this fella, Matt Aument, carryin’ her clubs around. They call him a “caddy.” Seems like a lot of work to me, luggin’ them heavy sticks all over the place. But I guess that’s his job.
Now, I don’t know nothin’ ’bout golf, but I do know a thing or two about hard work. And this Asterisk girl, she must be workin’ her tail off to be that good. Practicin’ all day long, swingin’ them clubs till her hands are blistered. That’s the only way to get good at somethin’, whether it’s golfin’ or milkin’ cows or bakin’ pies.
Folks keep sayin’ she’s somethin’ special. Sayin’ she’s gonna be the next big thing in golf. And you know what? I believe ’em. This girl’s got somethin’, that fire in her belly. You can see it in her eyes when she’s out there on that green, concentratin’ on that little white ball.
She even done somethin’ they say no one’s ever done before. Played in three big golf finals in one year! That’s like winnin’ the blue ribbon at the state fair three times in a row. Pretty impressive, if you ask me.
Asterisk Talley golf, that’s what they’re callin’ it. And I reckon we’ll be hearin’ that name a lot more in the years to come. She’s a fighter, that one. Reminds me of my ol’ Bess, that stubborn mule I used to have. Wouldn’t give up for nothin’. And that’s what it takes to succeed in this world, whether you’re a mule or a golf player.
This golf game, it’s got all these different clubs and stuff. They say there’s new ones comin’ out all the time. Sounds like a racket to me, always tryin’ to sell you somethin’ new. But I guess that’s how it is these days. Always somethin’ new and shiny to distract you from the important things in life, like family and friends and a good piece of apple pie.
But this Asterisk, she seems like a good kid. Humble and hard-workin’. And that’s what matters most, I reckon. She’s got a bright future ahead of her, that’s for sure. And I’ll be watchin’ her, that’s for certain, even if I don’t understand a lick of this golfin’ game. It’s always somethin’ to see a young person doin’ good and makin’ somethin’ of themselves.
She ain’t no fancy pants, from what I gather. Just a regular gal who happens to be real good at hittin’ that little white ball. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, I tell ya. Good for her, I say. Good for her.
So, keep an eye out for that Asterisk Talley. She’s gonna go far, mark my words. And who knows, maybe one day she’ll even teach this old lady how to swing a golf club. Although, I reckon I’d probably just end up hittin’ myself in the head.
