Well, let me tell you ’bout them Virginia Tech Hokies back in 2007. That was a year, let me tell ya, a real year for football. Them boys, they played their hearts out, they did.
The 2007 Season, A Real Barn Burner
Now, I ain’t no fancy football expert, but even I could see them Hokies were somethin’ special. They won a whole bunch of games, 11 of ’em, I think. Lost a few too, but hey, nobody’s perfect, right? They was ACC champions, that’s what they was! Beatin’ all them other college teams. Heard tell they was ranked pretty high up too, somethin’ like number 9 in the whole country. That’s somethin’ to crow about, ain’t it?
- They had this coach, Frank Beamer, a good ol’ boy, knew his football, he did. He got them boys playin’ like a well-oiled machine.
- And that HokieBird, their mascot, that crazy turkey thing, always got the crowd riled up. Good for them, I say, good for ’em.
Folks ’round here, they was all talkin’ ’bout them Hokies. Everywhere you went, it was “Hokies this” and “Hokies that.” They was the talk of the town, the pride of Virginia Tech, that’s for sure. They played hard, they played tough, and they won a lot of games. That’s what matters, ain’t it? Winnin’.
More Than Just Football
Now, it wasn’t just about the winnin’, though that was mighty fine. Them boys, they was good kids, most of ’em. Studied hard, played harder. Made their mamas proud, I betcha. And they gave us somethin’ to cheer for, somethin’ to be proud of. In them days, things wasn’t always easy, you know? But watchin’ them Hokies play, well, it just made you feel good. Took your mind off things, if only for a little while.
I remember watchin’ some of them games on the TV. Screamin’ and hollerin’ at the screen, like them boys could hear me. My old man, he’d just shake his head and laugh at me. But he was watchin’ too, don’t you worry. We was all watchin’. The whole town, the whole state, probably the whole country, tune in to see them Hokies play.
A Championship Year
That year, 2007, they won the ACC championship, like I said. That was a big deal, a real big deal. They beat some good teams to get there, too. Tough teams, strong teams. But the Hokies, they was tougher, they was stronger. They wanted it more, and they went out there and took it. That’s the way it should be, ain’t it? You want somethin’, you gotta go out there and earn it.
I heard tell they even played for the national championship a few years before that, back in 2000. Didn’t win that one, though. Lost to Florida State. Tough luck, but hey, they got there, didn’t they? That’s somethin’ to be proud of too. Just gettin’ there, that’s half the battle.
A Legacy of Toughness
Them Hokies, they got a reputation for bein’ tough. And that 2007 team, they lived up to that reputation. They played hard, they played smart, and they played together. That’s what makes a good team, ain’t it? Teamwork. And them Hokies, they had it in spades.
They had some good players on that team, real good players. I can’t remember all their names now, too many of ’em. But they was all good, all playin’ their part. And that coach, Beamer, he knew how to get the best out of ’em. He’s a legend ’round here, that’s for sure.
So, yeah, the 2007 Virginia Tech Hokies football team. They was somethin’ special, they was. They brought us a lot of joy, a lot of pride. And they showed us what it means to be a team, what it means to be tough, what it means to be a Hokie. And that’s somethin’ I’ll never forget. Not ever.
The End of an Era
Now, things change, you know? Players come and go, coaches move on. But the memories, them memories stay with ya. And the memories of that 2007 team, well, they’re good ones. They’re real good ones. They give us somethin’ to look back on, somethin’ to smile about. And that’s important, ain’t it? Rememberin’ the good times.
They give us a good season to remember , I tell you what. That season was one for the books, one that Hokies fans will be tellin’ stories about for years to come. They made us proud, they did. And that’s all a body can ask for.
