Alright, let’s yak about this Jayson Tatum fella and his basketball cards, the ones they call “hoops.” I don’t know much about these fancy cardboard things, but my grandson, he’s crazy about ‘em. Says they’re worth somethin’. Worth more than my old hens, I reckon.
So, this Tatum kid, he plays for the Celtics. Green team, like the grass in my pasture, only a whole lot faster. They say he’s good, real good. Scores a lot of points, whatever that means. My grandson yells at the TV when he plays, so I guess that’s somethin’.
Now, these “rookie cards,” that’s what the fuss is all about. Seems like when a player is new, like a calf just born, those first cards are special. Like the first egg a hen lays, I guess. Only these cards are shiny and got pictures. And folks pay good money for ‘em.

SportsCardsPro, that’s one of them websites. They got all sorts of numbers and charts, makes my head spin. But it tells you if the Tatum cards are goin’ up or down, like the price of milk. Seems like these Tatum “hoops” cards, especially the ones from 2022, they’re doin’ alright. Some folks are payin’ a pretty penny for ‘em. More than a good milk cow, I tell ya.
They got this thing called an “algorithm” that figures it all out. Sounds complicated, like fixin’ a tractor. But it looks at all the sales, see how much folks are actually payin’, and then it spits out a price. Kinda like how the market works when you sell your eggs, only fancier.
Now, there’s a whole bunch of Tatum cards out there. Thousands, my grandson says. But the rookie ones, those are the real treasures. Like finding a double yolk egg, only rarer, I suppose. And they got all different kinds, too. “Variations,” they call ‘em. Like different breeds of chickens, I guess. Some are worth more than others, just like some hens lay bigger eggs.
This Tatum fella, he went to some fancy school called Chaminade. Then he went to Duke University, another fancy place. Played basketball all along, seems like. My grandson says he was a star even then. Like a prize-winning rooster, strutting his stuff. And now he’s in the NBA, playing with the big boys. So, I guess that’s why his cards are worth somethin’. Folks like to collect things from famous people. Like autographs, only on cardboard.
My grandson, he keeps his cards in these little plastic sleeves. Says it keeps ‘em safe. Like puttin’ your good china in a cabinet. He handles ‘em real careful, like they’re delicate little eggs. And he’s always lookin’ for more. Says he wants to have the whole “set,” whatever that means. Sounds like collectin’ eggs, only a whole lot more expensive.
I don’t really get it, all this fuss over cards. But if it makes my grandson happy, and maybe makes him a little money someday, then I guess it’s alright. He says it’s an investment. Like buyin’ land, only smaller and with pictures of basketball players on it. Maybe one day those cards will be worth enough to buy a whole new flock of chickens. Now that would be somethin’.
So, if you got one of them Jayson Tatum hoops cards, hold onto it tight. Or sell it to my grandson, he’ll probably give you a fair price. Just don’t try to cheat him, he’s sharper than he looks. And if you don’t got one, well, don’t worry about it. There’s more important things in life than basketball cards. Like a good cup of coffee and a warm biscuit on a cold mornin’.
Anyway, that’s about all I know about these Jayson Tatum hoops cards. It’s a whole different world, this card collectin’ thing. But it seems to make folks happy, so I guess that’s all that matters. Just like a good harvest makes a farmer happy, or a full nest makes a hen happy. It’s all about findin’ joy in the little things, I reckon. Even if those little things are just pieces of cardboard with pictures on ‘em.
