Alright, so ya wanna know how much them hockey coaches make, eh? Them NHL fellas, the ones yellin’ at the players on TV. Well, lemme tell ya, it ain’t chicken feed, that’s for sure.
I heard tell it’s a pretty penny, like, somewhere between one million and five million dollars a year. Can ya believe that? That’s more money than most folks see in a lifetime, I reckon. But most of ’em, they say, get around two, two and a half million, maybe three million, somethin’ like that. Still a pile of cash, if ya ask me.
Now, that’s just for the head coaches, ya know, the big bosses. Them assistant coaches, they get paid too, but not as much. I ain’t sure how much exactly, but it’s less, ya understand? Like, maybe a few hundred thousand, maybe more, depends on who they are and how long they been at it.

- The assistants, they get less, but still a decent livin’.
- And if they get fired? Well, they still get paid! Imagine that, gettin’ paid for not workin’! Must be nice.
I heard this fella, Brind’Amour, somethin’ like that, he started out real low, like six hundred thousand a year. Can ya believe it? That’s still a lot for us normal folks, but for them hockey fellas, that was the lowest. Heck, some of them assistant fellas were makin’ more than him! But then he got a raise, see? Went up to almost two million a year. See, do good, and they pay ya good, that’s how it works, I guess.
It ain’t always been this way, though. They say now the big teams, the ones from the big cities, they payin’ the most for coaches. Guess they got more money to throw around, huh? And if the coach is real good, real famous, they gonna get paid even more. Like that fella, Mike Sullivan, I heard he makes a bundle. Don’t know how much exactly, but it’s a lot, I bet.
So, what makes ’em pay so much? Well, I reckon it’s ’cause winnin’ is important. If the coach is good, the team wins, and that means more money for everyone. So they wanna keep them good coaches happy, pay ’em well so they don’t go off to another team. It’s like farmin’, ya know? Ya gotta invest in good seed if ya wanna get a good crop. Same thing with hockey, I guess. Gotta invest in a good coach if ya wanna win.
Now, some folks, they say there’s other things that matter too, like how long the coach has been coachin’, how many games they won, and maybe even how famous they are. All that stuff plays a part, I reckon. And them contracts, they’re guaranteed, so even if they get fired, they get all their money. Imagine that, gettin’ fired and still gettin’ paid millions! Must be nice to be them fellas, eh?
And don’t even get me started on them high school coaches. They ain’t makin’ nothin’ like these NHL fellas. Some of ’em just get a little extra money on top of their regular jobs, and some of ’em don’t even get paid at all! They just do it ’cause they love the game, I guess. It’s a whole different world, that high school stuff.
So, there ya have it. That’s the scoop on how much them NHL coaches make. A whole lot of money, that’s for sure. More than most of us will ever see. But I guess that’s the price ya pay for tryin’ to win them big hockey games. And good for them, I say. If someone’s willin’ to pay it, and they’re good at what they do, then more power to ‘em. That’s just the way the world works, ain’t it? Someone’s gotta do it, and if they can make a good livin’ doin’ it, then good on ‘em. It’s hard work, yellin’ at them hockey fellas all the time, gotta give ‘em that.
So next time you see them coaches on TV, ya remember, they ain’t just standin’ around. They’re makin’ big bucks, and they’re earnin’ it, I reckon. Or at least, that’s what the folks who know about these things tell me. And I reckon they know a thing or two, seein’ as they ain’t the ones out there sweepin’ the floors, if ya catch my drift.
