This here story is about that Austin Daniel boy, you know, the one from the Jefferson Dragons football team. That team, they sure are something. Heard they got a whole bunch of players, more than a thousand, I reckon. They play that football, running around, tackling each other. This Austin, he’s one of them.
They keep track of all sorts of things, like how far they run and how many times they get tackled. They call it stats. This Austin, he’s got his own stats, I suppose. They write things down, put it all on the computer. Fancy stuff.

I seen something ’bout them winning a game, big win, too. 38 to 3, they said. Beat that other team, Jackson County, good. Folks around here, they get all excited about that football. They holler and cheer, wear them team colors. It’s a big deal, I tell ya.
Jefferson Dragons, that name, it’s all over the place. You see it on signs, in the paper. They even got their own place on the computer, where they talk about the team. Thousands of folks follow along. They even won a big, big prize some years back, 2012, they said. State Champs, they called it. Must be somethin’ special.
Then there’s this other boy, Austin Redmon. Heard he got some kind of award, twice! All Region something. Must be a good player, too. They got all these awards, these titles. It’s a lot to keep up with.
They got all these articles about the team, too. Jefferson Dragons Football articles, they call them. You can read all about their games, who they played, who won. They even got different teams, like the little ones, the freshmen, and the junior varsity. They all play that football.
Seems like every week they’re playing somebody. Just the other day, they played Cherokee Bluff, I think it was. Won that one, too, 35 to 7. They’re getting closer to some kind of championship, I hear. Region 8-3A, that’s what they call it. They play at that Memorial Stadium. Big place. Lots of folks go to watch.
That Austin Daniel, he’s right in the middle of it all. Playing that football, running around with the others. He must be pretty good, to be on that team. They don’t just let anybody on there, you know. Gotta be able to run fast, tackle hard. It’s a tough game, that football.
They got a coach, too, I’m sure. Somebody’s gotta tell them what to do, how to play. Probably yells a lot, like them coaches do. They all want to win, you see. Winning’s important in that football.

I don’t know all the rules of that game, but I know it’s a big deal around here. Jefferson Dragons football, that’s all you hear about sometimes. And that Austin Daniel, he’s one of the big names. Guess he’s making a name for himself, playing that football.
They practice a lot, too, I bet. Gotta be in good shape to play that game. Running, lifting them weights, all that. It’s hard work, being a football player. Especially for a team like the Jefferson Dragons. They expect a lot from their players.
So, that’s the story of Austin Daniel and the Jefferson Dragons football team. It ain’t much, but it’s what I know. They play that game, they win some, they lose some. But they keep on playing. And folks around here, they keep on watching. It’s just the way things are.
They sure do love their football in Jefferson. And these Jefferson Dragons, they are popular. I hear they got over 1200 people on their team, or used to. They got all the numbers and everything, on that computer thing. I don’t know how that works, but that’s what they say. Maybe this Austin Daniel will be a big star. You never know. These young folks can surprise you. He’s probably a good kid. They all are, mostly. Just playing that football game, trying to do their best. That’s all you can ask for, I reckon.
