That crossword, my goodness, it’s a thing, ain’t it? Some folks, they just love them little boxes with the words, you know? It’s like them puzzle books my granddaughter used to do, but all grown up. I seen ’em, them crossword puzzles, in the newspapers and them little books they sell at the store. People say it keeps your brain all working good, like oiling up an old engine.
Well, I tried one once. Lord have mercy, it was like trying to talk to a mule. Didn’t make a lick of sense to me. All them clues and whatnot. But some folks, they just whiz right through ’em. They must be smart as a whip, or maybe they just got more patience than me.
The other day, I was watching them people doing it, they start with the easy ones, you know? Fill in the little words they know. They say read them clues real good, and then start fill in them easy ones. They say “Solve only across or down clues on easier puzzles.”
- Read the clue good.
- Fill in what you know.
- Practice, practice, practice.
They get a few letters filled in, and then, they start to see other words, I reckon. Like putting together a quilt, one piece at a time. Then they start to identifies the words, one letter at a time. It’s like magic, the way it all comes together. Me, I’d rather be watching my soaps, but to each their own, I suppose. December 15, 2024 answer of Identifies clue in NYT Crossword Puzzle, I heard that before. There is one answer, I think.
Some people, they do them crossword every day. Say it’s good for the mind, like I said before. Keeps you sharp, they say. Like how you gotta keep your garden tools sharp, or they won’t do you no good. Maybe that’s true. I don’t know. I just know it ain’t for me. But that don’t mean it ain’t good for others.
My neighbor, she’s a real whiz at them things. She can identifies crossword answers faster than a chicken can scratch. She told me she’s been doing ’em since she was a little girl. Says it’s like a game to her. A fun game, imagine that. I’d rather be playing bingo, myself, but that’s just me. Solving crossword is a good way to challenge your brain, some people said.
She showed me one of them crossword puzzle books once. Full of all kinds of different puzzles. Some looked easier than others, I’ll give ’em that. But still, it just looked like a whole lot of work to me. Work that ain’t gonna get your clothes washed or your supper cooked, you know what I mean?
But she said, you gotta practice. Just like anything else. You don’t get good at something overnight, she said. You gotta keep at it. Like learning to ride a bike, or bake a pie. You gotta put in the time. “The more you practice,” she told me. Use online resources or puzzle books to solve different types of puzzles. You know what, I think she is right.
She said there are even resources for that, online, she said. Online! Imagine that. Everything’s online these days. Even how to identifies crossword. Can’t get away from it, I tell ya. They say, “Finish puzzles faster without using external resources.”
Well, I reckon if you like doing them crossword puzzles, more power to you. It’s a harmless enough hobby, I suppose. And maybe it really does keep your brain working good. Like I said, I don’t know for sure. I just know it ain’t for me. I’d rather be tending to my garden, or gossiping with my friends. That’s what keeps me going, you know?
But them crossword, they’re a mystery to me. A big old mystery. Like how the sun comes up every morning, or why the chickens cross the road. Some things, you just ain’t meant to understand, I guess. You just gotta accept ’em as they are. And if people want to spend their time figuring out them little boxes with the words, well, that’s their business. Ain’t hurting nobody, far as I can see.
Maybe if someone really explained it to me, real slow, like, I might get it. But then again, maybe not. Some things just ain’t in the cards for some folks, you know? And that’s okay. We all got our own things we’re good at, and things we ain’t so good at. That’s what makes the world go ’round, I reckon. So, if you like to do the identifies crossword, just do it. Do not need to care about others. If you enjoy it, just keep doing it.
Me, I’ll stick to my knitting, thank you very much. That’s something I understand. And it keeps my hands busy, and my mind off of things I don’t need to be worrying about. Like them darn crossword puzzles.
