Alright, let’s talk about this cores crossword thing. I ain’t no fancy scholar, mind you, just an old woman with some time on her hands. But I reckon I can tell ya a thing or two about these word puzzles.

Now, what is this “cores crossword” anyhow? Sounds complicated, but it ain’t, not really. It’s like them regular crosswords you see in the newspapers, the ones your grandpa used to squint at with his glasses halfway down his nose. You know, the ones with the little squares and you gotta fill in the words? This is kinda similar, but maybe with a twist.

I heard tell they got all sorts of these puzzles now. Some are easy-peasy, like figuring out what word goes with “cat” and “mouse.” (It’s “and,” by the way, in case you were wonderin’.) Then there are them brain teasers, like the one about Peter’s father and his five sons. Folks like to make things complicated, I tell ya. They give you a couple of clues and expect you to be a mind reader.

Then there’s riddles, too. I remember my old grandma used to tell me riddles when I was a little tyke. “What has an eye but cannot see?” she’d ask, and I’d scratch my head till my hair was a mess. The answer’s a needle, if you didn’t know. These days, they send riddles right to your email, two at a time, every couple of weeks. No spam, they say, but I don’t trust them city folks too much.

Some folks, they like their crosswords hard. They want them New York Magazine Sunday night kinda crosswords, the ones that make your head spin. Me? I like somethin’ a little simpler. Somethin’ I can do while I’m sippin’ my tea and watchin’ the birds out the window.

  • There’s places on the internet, they say, where you can find all sorts of crosswords. Places like Braingle, whatever that is. They got all kinds for free, so they say. You can just sit there and click-clack away on your computin’ machine, solvin’ puzzles till the cows come home.
  • And the best part is, you can do it anytime, anywhere. You don’t need no fancy books or pencils. Just your phone or your computer, and you’re good to go. They got puzzles for all kinds, too. Kids, grown-ups, even old folks like me. Easy ones, hard ones, and everything in between.

I even seen some crosswords for them English learners. Vocabulary somethin’ or other, the website’s called. They teach you words with crosswords, math words, science words, history words… All sorts of stuff. Back in my day, we learned by doin’, not by clickin’ on some fancy website. But times change, I guess.

And let me tell you, there’s a whole heap of these crosswords out there. Thousands of ‘em, they say. Games, quizzes, anagrams… My head’s spinnin’ just thinkin’ about it. But it’s all the same, really. Just words, words, words. And you gotta figure out how they fit together. It keeps the brain goin’, I reckon. Keeps you from gettin’ too addled in your old age.

So, this cores crossword… It’s just another way to play with words. Another way to pass the time. Another way to keep your mind sharp. And ain’t nothin’ wrong with that, I say. Whether it’s in a newspaper, on a computer, or scribbled on a piece of paper, a crossword’s a crossword. And that’s all there is to it.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I got a cup of tea to finish and a bird feeder to fill. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll try one of them online crosswords later. See if this old brain still works as good as it used to.
