Okay, so let me tell you about this whole BYU basketball coaching thing. It’s been a wild ride, and I’ve been following it closely because, well, I’m a huge college basketball fan.
It all started when I heard that BYU was getting a new head coach, Kevin Young. I was like, “Who?” Turns out, he’s a pretty big deal in the NBA, but this is his first time leading a college team. They signed him for a seven-year deal, around $30 million. That’s serious money, so the pressure is on for him to deliver.
Then came the assistant coaches. This is where it got interesting for me. I started digging into who these guys were and what they brought to the table. There were 5 guys that I found. They brought in Will Voigt, who used to be a head coach in the G-League. Then there was Tim Fanning from Overtime Elite, which is kind of like a training program for top high school players. John Linehan also came on board, he was with Saint Joseph’s before. And they got Chris Burgess, who was an assistant at Utah, a big rival of BYU. The last one was Brandon Dunson, another assistant from Stanford.
- Will Voigt: G-League head coach experience.
- Tim Fanning: From Overtime Elite, knows the young talent.
- John Linehan: Came from Saint Joseph’s.
- Chris Burgess: Former Utah assistant, knows the local scene.
- Brandon Dunson: Former Stanford assistant, first to be brought on.
I spent hours going through articles and old interviews about the coaches, trying to figure out what kind of team they were building. For example, I read that Brandon Dunson was the first assistant coach that Kevin Young brought in. I felt like a detective, piecing together all these clues, reading some quotes here and there about each of the coaches and their styles, trying to piece together the bigger picture.
My Findings
This coaching staff seems pretty solid. They’ve got a mix of experience from different levels of basketball. I think it’s a good sign that they’re not just bringing in a bunch of guys from one place. And apparently, there is some high school hotshot named A.J. Dybantsa, who’s supposed to be the top pick in the 2026 NBA draft. He’s a 6-foot-9 wing player, the No. 1 prospect in high school. The coaches were trying to get him to BYU, which shows you what level of recruits they are going after. I also noticed some key players already on the team, like Dallin Hall and Trevin Knell. They’re going to be important for the team’s success.
So, yeah, that’s my deep dive into the BYU assistant basketball coaches. It was a lot of work, but I enjoyed the process. Now, I’m just excited to see how this team does next season. I’ll definitely be watching and maybe even writing another post about how they’re doing. Who knows, maybe this Kevin Young guy and his crew will turn BYU into a powerhouse. Only time will tell!
