Okay, guys, so today I wanted to share a little project I worked on recently. I’ve always been a huge football fan, and I’ve been following the Arizona State Sun Devils for years. I was really curious to see the 2019 roster again, but I couldn’t find a simple, well-organized list anywhere.
So, I decided to take matters into my own hands. I started by doing some good old-fashioned web searches. I found out that Herm Edwards was the head coach that year – he was the 24th head coach, actually, as announced by Arizona State University and Vice President of University Athletics Ray Anderson back in 2017. I also found out that in 2021, ASU was ranked 21st.
I ended up scraping through a bunch of different sports websites. It was a bit of a mess, to be honest. Some sites had incomplete lists, others had outdated information, and some were just plain hard to navigate. But I kept at it, determined to get that roster.
After a few hours of digging, I finally managed to piece together a pretty comprehensive list of the players. I made sure to include their names, positions, year, height, weight, hometown, and their previous school. I even found that Brandon Aiyuk was on the team as a senior wide receiver.
Here’s how I organized it:
- I started with the offensive players, listing them by position.
- Then, I moved on to the defensive players, again organized by position.
- Finally, I added the special teams players.
Once I had all the data, I put it into a simple spreadsheet. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it was exactly what I was looking for – a clear, easy-to-read list of the 2019 Arizona State Sun Devils football roster. I even found out that they represented Arizona State University in the 2019 NCAA Division I FBS football season. It felt good to finally have it all in one place.
My Thoughts
This was a fun little project for me. It reminded me how much I enjoy digging into sports data and how satisfying it can be to create something useful out of a bunch of scattered information. Maybe I’ll do this for other teams and seasons in the future. Who knows? I might even turn it into a full-blown database if I’m feeling ambitious!
